Prêt-à-partager – a transcultural exchange in art, fashion and sports

The prêt-à-partager catalogue features the same-titled exhibition which is a transnational artistic dialogue on fashion, sport, Africa and its Diaspora.

The project, initiated and organised by ifa, began in November 2008 with an interdisciplinary art workshop in Dakar, Senegal. Seventeen artists from Africa and Europe came together for a multimedia-based and interdisciplinary art workshop in order to explore subjects of fashion, art, perception, and movement in the public space. They brought influences from the metropolises Berlin, Kinshasa, Dakar, London, Stuttgart, Douala, Hamburg and Johannesburg into the capital of Senegal. The collected works took the varied meanings and possibilities of clothing and fashion as determined by society and individuals and explored them in myriad ways that go beyond their function as consumer goods or economic factors. The Dakar metropolitan area served as the stage for the protagonists of a world in constant flux, where concepts of identity are fluid. The artists utilised the tapestries of their own history and familiarisation with new cultural practices, developing striking works and hybrid creations which are socially explosive. The exhibition was curated by Elke aus dem Moore and Sandrine Micossé-Aikins.
