The Colonial Repercussions event series by the Akademie der Künste addresses the aftermath of European Colonialism, the global effects of neocolonialism and the repercussions of these for decolonization. Hegemonic colonial power structures that persist in the arts, society and the sciences are examined during three symposia in order to process the blind spots of Europe’s colonial legacy.

Symposium I, 26 and 27 January 2018
“(Post-)Colonial Injustice and Legal Interventions“
In Cooperation with the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR)
Concept: Wolfgang Kaleck (Lawyer for Human Rights)

Starting with a two-day conference at the end of January, a group of international legal experts will discuss the question of reparations and the colonial crimes committed by the European states. The programme includes lectures, panels and artistic works by Antony Anghie, Luis Eslava, Andreas Fischer-Lescano, Ayrson Heráclito, Gesine Krüger, Christophe Marchand, Esther Muinjangue, Fiston Mwanza Mujila, Makau Mutua, Marcel Odenbach, Obiora Chinedu Okafor, Anne Peters und Liesbeth Zegveld et al.

Symposium II, 26 and 27 May 2018
“Performances of No-thingness”
Concept: Nana Adusei-Poku (Scholar for Cultural Studies)

The curatorial framing of this platform represents an inquiry into Black diasporic cultural productions as a critique on hegemonic Western concepts of identity. With artistic positions on queer studies, embodiment, performativity and decolonization by Ain Bailey, Melissa Blanco Borelli, Che Gossett, NIC Kay, Autumn Knight, Christina Sharpe and Sorryyoufeeluncomfortable et al.

Symposium III, 23 and 24 June 2018
“Planetary Utopias – Hope, Desire, Imaginaries in a Post-Colonial World“
Concept: Nikita Dhawan (Professor for Political Theory and Gender Studies)

In light of Spivak’s concept of a planetary responsibility, this symposium tries to develop a future that transforms colonial thinking. With: Sarah Ahmed, Kader Attia, Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Angela Davis, Coco Fusco, Bouchra Khalili, David Scott, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Rolando Vázquez et al.
