Sabelo Mlangeni wurde 1980 in Driefontein in der Nähe von Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga geboren. 2001 übersiedelte er nach Johannesburg, wo er den Market Photo Workshop besuchte und dort 2004 seinen Abschluss machte. Preisträger des POPCAP’16 für zeitgenössische Afrikanische Fotografie sowie des Tollman Award for the Visual Arts 2009. Zu seinen jüngsten Soloprojekten gehört u.a. Heartbreaker im artSPACE in Auckland, Neuseeland (2016). Sammelausstellungen in den letzten Jahren waren: Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life im Museum Africa, Johannesburg (2015); Distance and Desire: Encounters with the African Archive in der Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm (2013-2014); Public Intimacy: Art and Social Life in South Africa im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (2014); Apartheid and After im Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (2014); die Lubumbashi Biennale (2013); die Ausstellung The Unexpected Guest zur Liverpool Biennial (2012); die 9. Rencontres de Bamako – Biennale für afrikanische Fotografie in Mali und das Lagos Photo Festival, Nigeria (beides 2011); Appropriated Landscapes in der Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm (2011) sowie Figures and Fictions: Contemporary South African Photography im V&A Museum, London (2011).
