This edition of the MAM biennial presents 34 artists from 16 Brazilian states.
The curatorial proposal of the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art aims to critically reflect on the contemporary reality of Brazil, guided by the concept of "heat threshold" — a metaphor for the point of transformation where everything melts, falls apart and reconfigures itself. The proposal seeks to reveal a multidimensional vision of current Brazilian art, connecting and contrasting a wide range of practices and research that stand out for the intense creative energy they share.
To organize this reflection, five thematic areas were defined: General Ecology, Original Territories, Tropical Lead, Body-Devices and Trances and Crossings. The exhibition is not structured around these areas as isolated segments, but as lines of thought that allow readings and associations between the works. General Ecology explores environmental practices and a vision of total interconnection. Original territories focuses on narratives of indigenous peoples and quilombolas, offering alternative perspectives to the dominant capitalist discourse. Tropical Lead proposes a critique of representations of Brazil and national identity, while Body-Devices examines bodily transformations and hybridisms. Finally, Trances and Crossings addresses spiritual knowledge and experiences of transcendence, connecting art to the essential mysteries of life.
The 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art is organized by the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. This edition is being presented at MAC USP, due to renovations at the museum. The exhibition will remain on display until January 26, 2025.
