Our first impressions of the Antigua and Barbuda, and Grenada pavilions at the 58th Venice Biennale.

With Find Yourself: Carnival and Resistance, the Antigua and Barbuda pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale pays homage to Carnival as an event of liberation for Black Caribbeans as well as a site to critique the elites across the world. Curator: Barbara Paca with Nina Khrushcheva. Artists: Timothy Payne, Sir Gerald Price, Joseph Seton and Frank Walter, Intangible Cultural, Heritage Artisans and Mas Troup.

Epic Memory, Grenada's Venice pavilion brings together fragments of individual and collective stories, deposited in the past. The artists let old memories and forgotten sensations emerge, to defining their own identity in an equally fragmented Caribbean context. Curator: Daniele Radini Tedeschi. Exhibitors: Amy Cannestra, Billy Gerard Frank, Dave Lewis, Shervone Neckles, Franco Rota Candiani, Roberto Miniati, CRS avant-garde.

The 58th Venice Biennale focuses on artists who challenge existing habits of thought and open up our readings of objects and images. Curated by Ralf Rugoff, the biennale features 79 artists in the international exhibition and 89 national pavilions. Here are our first impressions of the Antigua and Barbuda, and Grenada pavilions both off site and open until until November 24, 2019.
