The California African American Museum announces that arts.black co-founder Taylor Renee Aldridge will join their staff as a Visual Arts Curator and Program Manager in August 2020.
Aldridge organized exhibitions with the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Artists Market, Cranbrook Art Museum, and The Luminary (St. Louis). In 2015, along with art critic Jessica Lynne, she co-founded arts.black, a journal of art criticism for Black perspectives. Her writing has appeared in Artforum, The Art Newspaper, Art21, ARTNews, Canadian Art, Contemporary And, Detroit Metro Times, Hyperallergic, and SFMOMA’s Open Space.
Aldridge is the recipient of the 2016 Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for Short Form Writing and the 2019 Rabkin Foundation Award for Art Journalism. She holds an M.L.A. from Harvard University with a concentration in Museum Studies and a B.A. from Howard University with a concentration in Art History.
On coming to CAAM at this momentous time of uprising and reckoning in our country, she notes, “It is a prime moment to turn to our Black institutions and think through ways we can preserve and talk about Black life and living. Coming into California, and Los Angeles specifically, which has such a rich history of Black resistance and radical imagination, excites me.”
