Transformation: Objects and Images in Relation

Transformation: Objects and Images in Relation features recent works by select contemporary Caribbean artists who are exploring the relationship between image-making and objects. The exhibition was inspired by process-based art practice whereby concepts and narratives are extended into different material and media. The multidisciplinary artists in the exhibition may, for instance, create sculptural objects and installations as an extension of their initial explorations in two-dimensional painting or, transform their sculptures into digital videos. Works on view explore a range of ideas and subjects from violence and the paradisiacal narratives of the Caribbean to the meanings of beauty, black bodies and 'living in the now.' As these ideas are remediated, the exhibition is concerned with the types of aesthetic possibilities that emerge and the new formal and intellectual questions that arise in the artists' exploration of material, object and image.

Contemporary Caribbean art offers a unique lens to think through the process of artistic remediation. The Caribbean is a space of migration and hybridity and theorised as having a “relational poetics.” Consequently, its experiences offer a wider cultural and philosophical frame to the reflections of essential identity, coherency and transformation in art practice.
