The “Friendly Confrontations” festival from 16 to 19 January 2020 will transform the Münchner Kammerspiele into a temporary space for various diasporic aesthetics and perspectives: artists, musicians, athletes and philosophers will meet – in friendly confrontations. Visual arts meet performance art, sports competition meets science, and alternative history meets virtual reality.

Based on the discussions on the curatorial legacy of Okwui Enwezor at the Haus der Kunst, the programme, conceived by curators Julia Grosse and Julian Warner, raises the question of the future role of art and cultural institutions in a globalised world. Enwezor demonstrated how art biennials and museums can approach the challenge of global narration by being aware of their own history. From the suburbs of Accra to Detroit’s vacant lots and the “broken window” district of Giesing, the Kammerspiele bring together social realities and artistic positions. They come from a wide range of contexts. But they speak to one another.
