MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues 2019: “The Long Now”

For the 5th time, “The Long Now” will take place at Kraftwerk Berlin, hosted by Berliner Festspiele in cooperation with Berlin Atonal from 30 March starting at 7 p.m. through to 31 March at midnight.

In the 5th “The Long Now” at Kraftwerk Berlin, instrumental, vocal and electronic live acts as well as installations will be presented in a program lasting over 30 hours. “The Long Now” invites you to step out of the usual time structures and offers a unique auditory experience. The vast space of the Kraftwerk Berlin with musicians and stages spread out on various levels gives the audience the possibility of perceiving sound not only as a musical, but as a spatial-bodily experience. In addition to the already announced artist’s names further projects can be revealed today.

The Italian DJ Donato Dozzy, well known for his hypnotic and nature inspired sound structures, will present an extended live performance. In one showcase contemporary musicians will work in the just intonation tradition under the title “The Harmonic Series”, featuring Byron Westbrook and Catherine Lamb. The guitarist, composer and sound artist Duane Pitre will premiere a solo work and collaborate with Turk Dietrich of Second Woman/Belong in a project called “First Tone”. Also to be experienced: John Elliott and Andrew Veres from Cleveland, known as Organic Dial, vocal works from Stine Janvin and Sofia Jernberg, a percussion piece from Eli Keszler, a spatial work for multiple trumpets by Lebanese artist Mazen Kerbaj and live acts from Shiva Feshareki and Marja Ahti. The composer Frederic Rzewski will present his highly political variation work “The People United Will Never Be Defeated” – thus creating a link to the opening of the festival: this milestone of contemporary music history can already be experienced here in the same constellation. This means that MaerzMusik is offering the unique possibility to experience the same composition, interpreted by the composer himself, in two very different contexts.

“The Long Now”. Supported by the Capital Cultural Fund. In cooperation with Berlin Atonal. With the support of the Kraftwerk Berlin.

The complete programme, which is curated by Berno Odo Polzer, Laurens von Oswald and Harry Glass, and can be checked out here.
