It Comes from the Head: A Straw Heritage
Curada por la historiadora de arte bahameña Simone Cambridge, <em>It comes from the head: A Straw Heritage</em> (Viene desde la cabeza: una herencia de paja) presenta la obra de cuatro artistas: Tamika Galanis, Anina Major, Jodi Minnis, y Averia Wright.
En su elogio de la creatividad, la disciplina y el compromiso con artesanos, trenzadores, proveedores y demás sostenedores de la tradición, la muestra It Comes from the Head está inspirada en Growing Functional Arts in the Bahamas, un libro de 1968 cosido a mano y escrito por la docente Thelma Eula Cambridge. El libro exploraba el papel de la artesanía de paja en la educación y la economía a la vez que documentaba sus técnicas, orígenes y aplicaciones.
“El libro exhibido en el vestíbulo del archivo yo lo conocía como la tesis de mi abuelita, Thelma Eula Cambridge”, explica la curadora Simone Cambridge. “Ella reconoció como parte importante del tejido cultural bahameño la artesanía en paja, práctica arraigada en el conocimiento heredado de nuestros ancestros esclavizados, a la vez que celebró la creatividad y la habilidad que pudo observar a su alrededor. Mi propia relación con la artesanía de paja me motiva a entender sus manifestaciones contemporáneas desde la perspectiva de la comunidad, la familia y el legado multigeneracional con un profundo respeto por el trabajo y el ingenio de las mujeres negras de Bahamas”.
La artesanía en paja está profundamente vinculada a las historias bahameñas de identidad, esfuerzo, migración, medio ambiente, turismo, colonialismo y esclavización transatlántica. It Comes from the Head resalta la significación del trabajo en paja como herencia y expresión artística contemporánea.
It Comes from the Head: A Straw Heritage puede visitarse hasta el 16 de febrero de 2025.
