2nd Cayman Islands Biennial

2nd Cayman Islands Biennial
26 June 2021
The second iteration of the Cayman Islands Biennial, is multi-site, tri-island exhibition project. Organised under the title ‘Reimagined Futures’, the curatorial team have invited artists to respond to the monumental upheavals that have taken place in 2020 including the worldwide impact of the coronavirus pandemic, increased local development, ongoing environmental challenges and extreme weather patterns, and social equity and justice movements. Seeking to adopt a more affirmative vision of the world we are now inhabiting, the guiding theme for this Biennial is intended to recast the long months of lockdown as an extended interlude — an opportunity for all of us to pause and reflect on our collective future.
Works by 40 Cayman-based artists are simultaneously on display at five different locations across the Cayman Islands – the National Gallery, Owen Roberts International Airport, the National Trust’s Mission House, and QEII Botanic Park in Grand Cayman, along with the Little Cayman Museum, and with special programming in Cayman Brac. Working in a wide variety of media from painting, photography and video, to collage, drawing and sculpture, video, ceramics and installation art, the artists in ‘Reimagined Futures’ offer a window into contemporary art making on these shores.
