Capsule 03 at Haus der Kunst presents new works by British-Ghanaian artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye .
With the Capsule exhibitions, Haus der Kunst provides young, international, emerging artists the opportunity to show new works in a museum setting. For this format, each artist is given one exhibition space, a fact reflected in the format’s name, “capsule.” This year, the Capsules present the work of two London-based artists, Lynette Yiadom Boayke (b. 1977) and Adele Röder (b. 1980).
Yiadom-Boakye created a series of oil paintings for the exhibition, all depicting figures in an environment that cannot be specifically located in either time or place. The dark figures, luminous shadows, the meeting of colors, and her backgrounds create a spectrum in which accents of light are pronounced. The figures’ features do not simulate particular characters, moods or situations. Yiadom-Boakye is more interested in what it is to be human than in the individual itself.
Each painting is usually executed within one day, two at most. The act of painting as an intense, temporally-limited exercise reflects her reservations about the notion of a “masterpiece,” and the openness of her pictorial understanding.
