CHURCH Projects welcomes the internationally acclaimed artist, Joël Andrianomearisoa. In line with CHURCH’s positioning around experimentation, innovation and foresight; and Andrianomearisoa’ s mixed media approach through unprecedented collaborations, this groundbreaking and site-specific presentation titled MY HEART BELONGS TO THE OTHER will be on view in Cape Town from the 18 February to 22 April 2023.
This show will facilitate Andrianomearisoa takeover of the CHURCH’s diminutive two level space presenting varied mediums and materiality and further rendering an intriguing conceptual framework and immersive experience. Andrianomearisoa’ s ability to continuously alter the scale and temperament of his practice in a thoughtful and poetic way will see the CHURCH transformed into a space symbolic of the mysterious, intriguing, strange and geographical other.
Andrianomearisoa alludes to this project being a metaphor. Perhaps this presentation speaks to the deeper meaning of human entanglement and complexity where each one of us is the proverbial other.
‘I have continued to feel a deep resonance to Andrianomearisoa work. He consistently mines the depth of human vulnerability and emotion, leaving one to contemplate that unknown and mysterious dark matter within ourselves and beyond. I feel that with this presentation at CHURCH, Andrianomearisoa will dress and undress the viewer over and over again in perpetuity.’ says CHURCH’s Hoosein Mahomed.
Andrianomearisoa will also use light to convey sensory experience and limitation. The presence and absence of light will impact the space and its navigability. The use of sound will amplify inner voices, understanding and intuition.
