MATERIAL AND MEANINGS
12 Abril 2024
Cierra: 25 mayo 2024
{{B:Materials and Meanings}} is a group exhibition curated by students of the Introduction to Curatorial Studies course of Edna Manley School of Visual Arts.
The exhibition is focused on presenting four project spaces which each take a particular perspective on the main theme and title of the exhibition. The project spaces feature both faculty and student work with specific spaces focusing on understanding social justice through sculptural forms; weaving as a self-care therapy and gendered experiences; the imagery of emotional expression; and exploring hidden experimental art practices. Spaces were conceptualized after conducting studio visits with artists and art students in the local community, responding to previous exhibitions and catalogues at The National Gallery of Jamaica and other art spaces of varying sizes internationally as well as recent editorials on sites such as Hyperallergic, C& AL, Art Forum and Art Africa Magazine.
Project Space 1 curated by Kyle Gooden, a third-year Painting BFA student, explores three of Raymond Watson’s metal sculptures in the context of social justice. In Project Space 2, Ryan McDonald, a second-year Fashion student, reflects on gendered issues and experiences that cause generational trauma, but also addresses the importance of self-healing through confronting the pain’s source. These topics are approached by artists LauraLee Jones, Michaella Garrick and Kobi Bailey. Project Space 3 curated by Leah Burke, a second-year Visual Communications student features the discreet home-based practices of two art students in newspaper collage and ceramics as a way of thinking through a medium. Lastly, Project Space 4 features Shanae Skervin’s look at emotional imagery via both the traditional and unconventional processes in portrait-based painting. Shanae is a second-year Fashion BFA major.
Artists featured in this exhibition of project spaces are: Raymond Watson, Laura Lee Jones, Michaella Garrick, Reneto Fuller, Kimberley Jones, Kobi Bailey, Christophe Bent, Alyssia Clarke and Marques Watt.
The exhibition runs until April 25th and is open by appointment. Please contact the course’s facilitator and current exhibition team lead oneika.russell@emc.edu.jm to schedule a visit.
