NYAU - The Ranter, the Tailor, the Winedealer

The contemporary art space EAC (les halles) brings together three artists of different nationalities, who in their own line of artistic activity have developed the project 'Nyau' via internet. Daniela Belinga Agossa (CH), Samson Kambalu (UK), Kurt Ryslavy (B) forge links closely rooted in their respective cultural heritage. They meet in their approach to make art an arena for critical thought and sovereign activities. Kurt Ryslavy NYAU / Geschaeft Kurt Ryslavy is a contemporary artist born in Austria now living in Brussels. Working as a conceptual artist, painter, poet and a wine merchant Kurt has built his multi-disciplinary practice around various rituals and cultures associated with wine exploring its potentials for self-delimiting, and strategy for the re- examination of particular life styles. Samson Kambalu NYAU / look! Malawi born Samson Kambalu is a London based artist whose playful and questioning works have manifested in several media from installation, performance, to film and literature. He is an author of two novels, Jive Talker and Uccello’s Vineyard. His psychogeographical nyau cinema is a series of site-specific film clips presented as interventions online and in specially made film booths and cinema installations. Daniela Belinga NYAU / Cavale Daniela Belinga Agossa from Stilli, Switzerland is an artist, who formerly trained as a dressmaker. She draws from her education and experience to develop revealing provocations as visual art. She has employed various sculptures, paintings and mixed media installations as vehicles for the revaluation of the everyday life. ‘Nyau’ is an appropriation of an African word for ‘excess’. Samson Kambalu’s tribe, the Chewa, is well known in Southern Africa for developing a whole culture centred around the recognition of the indispensability of excess in all systems and organisms. The Chewa have celebrated nyau through a masquerade tradition, Gule Wamkulu’ (the Great Play), now a UNESCO world heritage.
