The artists Wycliffe Mundopa and Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude, who are both living and working in Zimbabwe, reflecting in their colorful expressive paintings on the impact of their environment, which confronts the viewer with topics such as poverty, violence, prostitution and social classification of people. Even if both artists have similar themes, they approach them differently: Mundopa’s artworks focus on the dynamic lives of women in Africa and their different roles in conflict between tradition and modern life as well as children, who become adults early on because of economic burdens. Nyaude’s figures resist a concrete characterization and identity. His images oscillate between figuration, abstraction and hallucination.
Mundopa’s and Nyaude’s work has been widely exhibited throughout their hometown, as well as South Africa, Australia and the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Australia, France, Germany and The Netherlands and many others.
Wycliffe Mundopa (b. 1987 in Rusape, Zimbabwe) lives and works in Harare. He studied art from 2005 to 2007 at the National Gallery Zimbabwe Visual Arts Studios.
Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude (b.1988 in Mbare, Zimbabwe) graduated from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe Visual Arts Studios, from where he received his National Certificate in Fine Art in 2008. Born and raised in Mbare, which is Harare’s and perhaps Zimbabwe’s most vibrant and notorious ghetto, Nyaude works in his paintings against a classification and certain identity that has been socially defined by the voice of the state.
