Conversations and Salon: Art Basel’s program 2014

Art Basel’s Conversations and Salon series will bring together leading artists, gallerists, art historians, curators, museum directors, critics, and collectors from across the world to Basel to discuss a diverse range of topics.

This year, the 27 talks will feature a significant number of artists including El Anatsui, Ed Atkins, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Alisa Baremboym, AA Bronson, Pablo Bronstein, Gregory Buchakjian, Maurico Dias, Sam Falls, Mario Garcia Torres, Beatriz Gonzalez, Pascal Hachem, Deanna Havas, Karl Holmqvist, Balz Isler, Gavin Kenyon, Josh Kline, Paul Kneale, Juatta Koether, Beryl Korot, Yve Laris Cohen, Isabel Lewis, Basim Magdy, Nick Mauss, Dieter Meier, Mathieu Mercier, Kohei Nawa, Otobong Nkanga, Katja Novitskova, Ahmet Ö?üt, Alexandra Pirici, Alex Prager, Judy Radul, Walter Riedweg, Megan Rooney, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Christopher Kulendran Thomas, Wolfgang Tillmans, Fumito Urabe, Martina-Sofie Wildberger, and Andrew Norman Wilson.

Art Basel’s Conversations series launches with the Premiere Artist Talk, which this year sees the German artist Wolfgang Tillmans discuss his career, work and most recent projects with his long-time gallerist Daniel Buchholz. On Thursday morning András Szántó, author and cultural consultant, leads a discussion titled ‘Institutions for Time-based Art’, assessing the evolution and future of performance art, with RoseLee Goldberg, Founding Director and Curator of Performa, New York; Otobong Nkanga, Artist, Antwerp/Berlin; Catherine Wood, Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance at Tate Modern, London. On Friday, a panel led by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director, Serpentine Gallery, London, focuses on artists engaged in the field of dance and choreography. ‘The Artist as Choreographer’ is the eighth installment in the series entitled ‘Artistic Practice’. On Saturday morning, as part of ‘The Artist and the Gallerist’ series, Pascale Marthine Tayou will be in conversation with Lorenzo Fiaschi, offering an insight into the unique and essential artworld relationship between artists and their representing galleries. The artist Sturtevant, who passed away in May 2014, will be honoured on Sunday morning when a panel will discuss her career and the significance of her practice.

Highlights of the afternoon Salon program, an open platform for short presentations, include: an art market talk with Josh Baer, Publisher of Baer Faxt and Art Advisor, New York, and the collector David Mugrabi; Beryl Korot, Artist, New York, in conversation with Mark Godfrey, Author of ‘Abstraction and the Holocaust’ and Curator at Tate Modern, London, about the artists ground-breaking work Dachau 1974; Reto Thüring, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, hosting a discussion titled ‘Curating at the Periphery’ with Florence Derieux, Curator of Art Basel’s Parcours sector and Director at FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims, Michelle Grabner, Co-Director of The Suburban in Oak Park, Founder of The Poor Farm in Little Wolf, Wisconsin and Co-curator for the 2014 Whitney Biennial, New York, David Norr, Senior Curator of Exhibitions, Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio and Sabine Rusterholz Petko, Director, Kunsthaus Glarus; the artist El Anatsui discussing the relationship between artist and curator with Bomi Odufunade, Contributing Writer for Contemporary And (C&) and Art Advisor, Paris/Lagos/New York, and Bisi Silva, Founding Director of Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos, Nigeria; and Yuko Hasegawa, Chief Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, leading a discussion titled ‘Japan’s Post Murakami Generation’ with the artists Kohei Nawa, Kyoto, and Fumito Urabe, Nagoya.
