Peruvian artist Antonio Paucar wins 11th edition of Artes Mundi Prize

Antonio Paucar won of the £40,000 Artes Mundi Prize, one of the UK's leading international biennial exhibitions and art award. The Peruvian-born artist was selected for the 11th edition of the event, which introduces new artists' voices to UK audiences.
Born in 1973 in Huancayo, Peru, and now living and working between Berlin and Huancayo, Paucar has a distinctive artistic language spanning performance, sculpture, and video. Drawing from his indigenous Andean heritage and its material culture, the artist addresses contemporary conflicts affecting indigenous communities, particularly environmental threats to land and home.
As part of the AM11, the artist presents a series of new and existing large-scale handwoven alpaca wool sculptures, accompanied by videos documenting their creation through live performances.
The works, reflective of ritual and intervention, highlight Antonio Paucar as:
"an artist whose expansive practice encapsulates a long-term commitment to and engagement with his local environment and communities, creating work that speaks powerfully to marginalised contexts and extracted histories,” said the jury of the prize.
His work is currently on display at Mostyn, Llandudno, and the National Museum Cardiff as part of AM11, presented across venues in Wales until March 1st, 2026.
