Kings of Kin – Bodys Isek Kingelez, Moke and Chéri Samba

From September 12 to October 30, 2020, Galerie Natalie Seroussi and Galerie MAGNIN-A will join forces to present in their two Parisian spaces, for the first time in a gallery, a major exhibition devoted to three emblematic artists from Kinshasa (DRC): Bodys Isek Kingelez (1948-2015), Moke (1950-2001) and Chéri Samba (1956).

These three “Kings of Kin” have gone through all the political changes of their time. They grew up in the Belgian Congo, became recognized while the country took the name of Zaire, and experienced the birth of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each in their own way, these three artists deliver an inseparably aesthetic and political work.

The exhibition KINGS OF KIN gathers around 30 new and historical works from these artists that are inspires by the everyday life, events of the Congolese society and the international news. As observers of the changes happening to their country and if its political events, their work translates the terrific energy of the Congolese society with its hopes and torments.

In its space in Boulevard Richard Lenoir, MAGNIN-A presents the buildings of Bodys Isek Kingelez together with historical works by Moké created between 1974 and 1986 and recent and unseen works by Chéri Samba.

On the other side of the Seine, the Galerie Natalie Seroussi focuses on the colourful and utopian buildings of Bodys Isek Kingelez.
