Maren Hassinger: Monuments

Beginning June 16, The Studio Museum in Harlem will present a new, year-long, site-specific installation by Harlem-based artist Maren Hassinger in Marcus Garvey Park.

This exhibition is part of the Studio Museum’s inHarlem initiative, which continues the Museum’s exhibitions and programs at a variety of partner and satellite locations in the neighborhood while the Museum is closed to begin construction on its new building.

Maren Hassinger: Monuments (June 16, 2018–June 10, 2019) comprises eight site-specific sculptures that respond to the landscape of Marcus Garvey Park, each created using found twigs and branches. In the tradition of the artist’s earlier projects, such as Wreath (1979), the forms of the sculptures address aspects of the park’s natural and built environment—a cube echoes the form of a nearby chess table, a mound corresponds to a rocky outcropping, and a rectangle takes its shape from a nearby flowerbed. Hassinger is creating the works with the assistance of volunteers, including neighborhood residents and participants in the Studio Museum’s teen programs, so that Monuments is a project made in Harlem and for Harlem. Transforming sites in Marcus Garvey Park both physically and psychologically, Monuments is a testament to community and to the human interaction with the natural world around us.
