Martine Syms: In the (Commercial) Break

KADIST presents In the (Commercial) Break, a screening of videos selected by Martine Syms as part of her KADIST residency, followed by a conversation with the artist.

The screening will present Syms’ multipart video work Lessons alongside other works that are significant to the artist, including videos by artists she is close to like Allie Avital, Ximena Cuevas, Hannah Black, Rami George, Irena Haiduk, Kevin Jerome Everson, Nicole Miller, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Ed Owens, Sondra Perry, Diamond Stingily and Wu Tsang. These selections reflect on Syms’ investigation into identity and image production in contemporary life.

{{I:Lessons }}is an ongoing, multipart video work by Martine Syms, composed of 30-second videos playing in a continual, randomlyordered stream. Snapshots of disconnected experiences and subjects accumulate into a mass of fragmentary narratives, relating (directly and incidentally) to the lives of black Americans. Drawn from myriad sources and contexts – including YouTube videos, 1980s TV shows, and personal archival footage – these self-contained segments are taken from a growing corpus that Syms has been compiling since 2014.
