As the leading UK organisation supporting emergent art practice from British arts education, New Contemporaries offers an insight into today’s creative practices, showcasing some of the most dynamic work being made.
Submissions for 2019 will open 10am (GMT), December 10, 2018 and close 2pm (GMT) January 28, 2019. The 2019 show will mark the 70th anniversary of New Contemporaries and follows the success of Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2018 on display at the South London Gallery (SLG) until February 24, 2019.
New Contemporaries Director, Kirsty Ogg said: « New Contemporaries celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2019. While we will take this moment to pause and reflect back on our incredibly rich history, it is important that we also remain responsive to the needs of emerging artists. Opening up our annual call to artists outside of formal, degree-awarding programmes has been a significant moment for us, and a way to publicly acknowledge that not all artists follow the same path when developing practice ».
Throughout the exhibition’s history a wealth of established artists have participated in New Contemporaries exhibitions including post-war figures Frank Auerbach and Paula Rego; pop artists Patrick Caulfield and David Hockney; YBAs Damien Hirst and Gillian Wearing; alongside contemporary figures such as Tacita Dean, Mark Lecky, Mona Hatoum, Mike Nelson and Chris Ofili; whilst more recent emerging artists including Ed Atkins, Monster Chetwynd, Rachel Maclean and Laure Prouvost have also taken part.
New Contemporaries is a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) and Registered Charity.
Who is eligible to apply?
Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2019 is open to individual artists or collaborative groups who meet the criteria specified below.
Collaborative partnerships and group applications are eligible as long as at least one member of the group meets these criteria. Applicants must be one of the following:
* ‘College’ here refers to Higher Education institutions offering recognised degree qualifications at undergraduate or postgraduate level. Students enrolled in Art & Design Foundation courses are not eligible.
* ‘Fine Art’ here refers to the visual arts including but not limited to painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, video, audio, performance and installation. Graduates of applied arts courses are not eligible. ‘Applied Arts’ here refers to the application of design and aesthetics to objects of function and everyday use.
* ‘Alternative learning programme’ refers to programmes, formally recognised by the sector that operate broadly as alternatives to BA or MA study. These programmes must have been established before 2016 and offer artists an opportunity to develop their practice in an environment outside of a ‘college’ as defined above.
Regrettably, residencies and informal peer-to-peer networks that do not have a clearly defined process of application or recruitment are not eligible to apply. Currently we are accepting applications from the following programmes: AltMFA, Islington Mill Academy, Open School East, Royal Drawing School, School of the Damned, The Syllabus, TOMA and Turps Art School.
Is there an application fee?
New Contemporaries is an educational charity (No. 1013848). The administrative costs associated with giving proper attention to the huge number of submissions we receive each year mean that we must charge an application fee. The charge is currently £25
