The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) and Independent Curators International (ICI) announce The 2019 Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean.

In its sixth edition, the curatorial research award will support a contemporary art curator based anywhere in the world to travel to Central America and the Caribbean to conduct research about art and cultural activities in the region. Intended to generate new collaborations with artists, curators, museums, and cultural centers in the area, this award will cover curatorial residencies, studio visits, and/or archival research.

The CPPC Travel Award will support a curator to visit one or multiple locations in Central America and the Caribbean. The travel period can be anywhere between three weeks and three months, and take place between February and September 2019. The grant will cover costs of up to USD 10,000.

Application guidelines for the CPPC Travel Award can be found on ICI’s website in English and Spanish. Independent curators and those with institutional affiliations may apply. Applications from established and emerging curators (3+ years of professional experience) will be considered. A jury of professionals who live in, or have extensive knowledge of the region, will select the successful applicant.

The inaugural CPPC Travel Award was granted in 2012 to Pablo León de la Barra, who conducted research trips to the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama, and Puerto Rico with the aim to reread seminal historical moments in the region that have acquired new relevance in the current political and economic reality. The 2013 recipient, Remco de Blaaij, set out to research women activist practices in the countries of Guatemala, Jamaica, Nicaragua, and Suriname. The 2014 awardee, María Elena Ortiz, explored film and video practices in Aruba, Martinique, the Bahamas, and Trinidad and Tobago. In 2015, the recipients Leah Gordon and André Eugène traveled to the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago to research regional models of artists’ self-organization, alternative strategies of community education, and discover new exhibition networks for Haitian artists. The 2017 recipient of the award, Marina Reyes Franco, traveled to the Dominican Republic, Panama, The Bahamas, Jamaica, and Trinidad to investigate the ideas of paradise and fiscal paradise, and the geographical coincidence of these concepts.
