Congratulations to Nomusa Makhubu

Nomusa Makhubu

To describe Nomusa Makhubu’s Self-Portrait, a photographic series included in Dak’Art 2014’s official exhibition, as stunning, is an understatement. The photographs reflect the artist’s successful combination of technical proficiency and intellectual depth. Makhubu, who is also an art historian, articulates bleak narratives deeply charged with historical signification. Her mode of address involves mapping her individual body onto the bodies of historical black subjects recuperated from colonial-type photographs. It is a kind of time-travelling in which she merges South Africa’s colonial past and contemporary present to explore the evolving nature of black self-representation, racial and gender representativity, and various forms of social identity and identification in post-apartheid South Africa.

Il n’est pas exagéré de qualifier de renversant le Self-Portrait de Nomusa Makhubu, une série photographique présentée à l’exposition officielle du Dak’Art 2014. Les photographies reflètent le mélange réussi de l’artiste, à savoir l’excellente technique et la profondeur intellectuelle. Makhubu, historienne en art de surcroît, articule de sombres récits chargés d’une profonde signification historique. Sa façon de s’adresser au public implique la superposition de son propre corps sur les corps de sujets noirs historiques qu’elle a récupérés à partir de photos de type colonial. C’est en quelque sorte un voyage dans le temps où elle fusionne le passé colonial et le présent contemporain de l’Afrique du Sud afin d’explorer la nature changeante de l’auto-représentation des noirs, de la représentativité du genre, de la race et des diverses formes d’identité sociale et d’identification dans l’Afrique du Sud post-apartheid.
