Akinbode Akinbiyi: Journeys in Urban Time Frames

In cooperation with the Weimar Arts Festival and the Goethe-Insitut, Gallery Eigenheim presents ‘Wanderungen in urbanen Zeiträumen’, an exhibition by Akinbode Akinbiyi winner of the Goethe Medal 2016.

About 100 years ago the Bauhaus in Weimar set itself the goal of a social utopia: combining art, the creative shaping of everyday social life and the design of functional living space. This is still one of the ideals of international architecture. But is the growth of huge cities coupled with the devastation of whole landscapes conductive to long-term planning?

The Nigerian photographer Akinbode Akinbiyi examines these issues while documenting life in megacities, particularly in Africa. His works testify to how people communicate and coexist, how space is altered and what is perceived as private and what as public space. Akinbiyi studied in Nigeria, England and Germany, where he has lived and worked as a photographer, curator and writer for over 45 years. He recently founded an intercultural art school, initiating, with the Goethe-Institute Nigeria, a photography master class from which a project aimed at networking photography schools in Africa emerged.
