GeoVanna Gonzalez: HOW TO: Oh, look at me

In this ongoing series, the artist creates works of art to accompany poems featured in the online open-source poetry collection tutorials by Martin Jackson at www.tutorials.fyi. Written and shared in cloud-based Google Docs, readers are invited to comment and edit the poems, creating a constantly-evolving, shifting collection of poetry that is never static or complete.

The fifth iteration of this series of works that translate the poems into visual form, HOW TO: Oh, look at me is inspired by the poem No Rothko, and features a large, interactive wrought iron sculpture that visitors can sit in as a meditative space for escape into contemplative seclusion. Erected in monotone blues as the sound of Miami rain floods the space, the work builds upon the feelings Gonzalez experiences when staring at a Rothko painting while imagining the grid-like infrastructure that built the internet. It also explores the way we interact online, transitioning from fashioning our public personas to surrendering our private data in a single act.

When entering the gallery space visitors will be asked to put a sticker over their camera phones as a method of driving their thoughts to this very contradiction, and ask them to reflect on who they are when they have no one to share it with.

Gonzalez frequently references architecture to consider the intersection of the public and private in her work, and will activate the installation with a performance that will serve as the basis for a film that will run throughout the duration of the installation.

Wednesday to Saturday 11am – 5pm By appointment and walk-in by capacity. Link to make appointments
