Igshaan Adams: When Dust Settles

The Standard Bank Gallery present When Dust Settles, a solo exhibition by Igshaan Adams, the 2018 Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art. The exhibition makes its first stop in Johannesburg following a successful run at the National Arts Festival where it started a national tour of various key institutions and galleries.

When Dust Settles presents a body of work that explore iconographies and objects of material culture central to the shaping of Adams’ identity and upbringing in the Cape Coloured community. It expands on his earlier work and charts a new course for his practice as an artist.

In earlier shows Adams made use of Islamic prayer mats, self portraiture, weaved ropes, wire and cotton threads into abstract sculptural forms. He presented pieces of vinyl flooring too. The current exhibition re-evaluates this material with a bolder creative resolve.

Adams was born in 1982 in Cape Town to Muslim parents. He was raised by his Christian grandparents in Bonteheuwel on the Cape Flats. His cross disciplinary practice is an ongoing investigation into hybrid identity and liminality, particularly in relation to race, religion and sexuality as expressed through his formative experiences growing up in the Cape Coloured community.

With When Dust Settles, Adams has created an eclectic and multi-sensory large-scale installation, bringing together aspects of textiles and sculpture, found objects and performance to create an immersive environment whose experience aims to engage audiences across various senses.
