«O REGRESSO DE AMILCAR CABRAL» (The Return of Amilcar Cabral, 1976) - Film History from Guinea-Bissau: The Return of an Archive

27 Novembro 2014

Closes: 4 December 2014

“Why has it been so difficult, if not impossible, to represent decolonisation in African cinema?” was the question Malian film scholar Manthia Diawara asked some time ago. “Why do we have such a very short memory?”
Since 2011, the Berlin-based artist Filipa César together with two pioneers of early cinema in Guinea-Bissau, Flora Gomes and Sana na N'Hada, have made great efforts to preserve the film history of the years around Guinea-Bissau’s independence and to uncover the history remembered during this time.
In collaboration with the archive INCA (Instituto Nacional do Cinema e Audiovisuel, Bissau), directed by Carlos Vaz, as well as ARSENAL (Institute for Film and Video Art, Berlin), the film archives threatening to disintegrate completely could be digitalised.
The group around Filipa César presents historical film documents and will engage in a discussion with the audience about their experiences after a tour of Guinea-Bissau with their mobile cinema project.
Featuring: Filipa César (Berlin), Sana na N'Hada, Flora Gomes, Suleimane Biai (all Bissau), and Tobias Hering (Berlin)
The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Goethe-Institut cordially invite you to this project presentation. The project was funded within the context of the Federal Foreign Office‘s Cultural Preservation Programme.
