About Us

Contemporary And (C&) is a platform for international contemporary art and thought. Founded in 2013 as a bilingual online magazine, C& has since unfolded into the C& Cosmos: two online magazines (C& Magazine and C& América Latina Magazine), critical print publications, free education programs, and projects that move between digital and physical space. From reading rooms to mentoring, from artist commissions to the C& Cyclopedia, we create spaces for reflection, connection, and exchange.

What we center
C& thrives on connection across geographies and generations, between artists and audiences, histories and futures. We resist categories and singular histories, making space for the multiple, the unfinished, and the transformative. Our work is rooted in centering the global majority, with a constantly growing network on the ground of artists, writers and thinkers who shape and challenge contemporary discourses.
Why it matters
In a world overflowing with content but hungry for meaning, C& offers depth where there is speed, resonance where there is noise. We make complex conversations about art and culture approachableand relevant. For artists and writers, it’s a space to publish, connect, and grow. For readers, curators, and funders, it’s away into knowledge, perspectives, and practices often overlooked in publishing.

Who we are
C& is made by a core team in Berlin, Nairobi, New York, and beyond alongsidean extended network of contributors – from established art writers in Harare to emerging curators in London, from artists in Santo Domingo to critics in São Paulo. Together, we make C& a living, breathing platform where the global becomes personal and the personal becomes universal.
Ways to engage
C& is free and accessible because knowledge should be shared. Read our magazines, dive into the archive, engage with our projects, attend events, join workshops, or support us through donations. However you enter the C& Cosmos, you become part of anexpansive community shaping how contemporary art is seen and understood.

C& REGIONAL HUBS
C& is a global network and you are already in it. The core team operates from three key hubs across the globe. In Berlin, our archive and print collection are housed alongside a collaborative workspace for the international team. Nairobi hosts a public reading room and project space, supporting local exchange and the international C& Education program. Since 2024, New York has served as a base for building long-term partnerships and visibility within the US art scene.

Berlin
C& Berlin serves as the physical home of the C& archive. Here, all the C& print issues produced over the years are stored, along with the C& books – attempts to unearth and reframe our archival content to spark new synergies. The space also houses a collection of books that is accessible when not on tour with the C& Center of Unfinished Business or featured in our interventional book residencies. Beyond its archival role, C& Berlin is a vital workspace for our international team, where we come together, collaborate, share physical space, and engage in collective thinking.
